On Saturday 3rd October 2026, four members joined the AGM of the Chepstow Archaeological Society to demonstrate 'Fleece to Fabric' showing all the stages involved; Drop Spindle or Long Suspension Spinning.

The Society have unearthed mediaeval Whorl Spindles at various excavations and we were able to demonstrate their use. Whorls are used as part of Distaff Spinning, where spindles are used 'in hand' or 'short suspension'.

"We had a great day at the Chepstow Archaeological festival. Lots of interest in everything we did and I had lots of people having a go at drop spindling, It was a good exhibition of heritage crafts. And a really wide age range attended too." Jo Glenn.

In addition we showed examples of wool dyeing with native plants.
